Hiroo Onoda: The Last Surviving Japanese Soldier

    Early Life and Military Training

Hiroo Onoda was born in 1922 in Kainan, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

He joined the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942 and underwent rigorous training at the Nakano School on Lubang Island in the Philippines.

    Guerrilla War

In 1944, Major Taniguchi ordered Onoda, then a 22-year-old second lieutenant, to lead a guerrilla unit on Lubang Island.

After the Allies captured the island, most of the Japanese troops were killed or taken prisoner. However, Onoda and three comrades escaped into the jungle.

    Isolation and Survival

For the next 29 years, Onoda and his companions fought a lone guerrilla war against the local Philippine military.
